I’ll bet you’ve never even heard of Malaga. I hadn’t, and I write about liquor every day! However, the whiskey wizards at Keeper’s Heart certainly have, and they’ve used ex-fill Málaga barrels to finish their exquisite 10-year-old single-malt Irish whiskey. Clearly, they know something because the impact of the Málaga on the malt is magical! So much so that it won the ‘World’s Best Irish whiskey’ award at the 2023 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
The malt spends ten long years in ex-fill bourbon barrels, providing a wonderful baseline character full of vanilla, caramel, and oak notes. And then, of course, it’s finished in Málaga wine casks. For those who don’t know (including myself), Málaga is a wine region in Spain renowned for a sweet fortified dessert wine made from Moscatel and Pedro Ximenez grapes with roots dating back over 3000 years! It’s described as similar to its cousin Pedro Ximenez sherry, although some argue that Málaga possesses a more refined and nuanced flavor palette.
As with sherry-finished whiskies, the Málaga imparts sweet fruit and nutty notes but also adds distinct marzipan and stone fruit characteristics. And this whiskey offers those sweet and nutty notes in spades! Pouring a bright amber-gold into my trusty Glencairn nosing glass, the whiskey immediately releases a torrent of sweet and creamy aromas. Waves of dry raisins, English toffee, honey, and fresh croissants lead to secondary notes of dark berries, freshly cut apricots, cooked oatmeal, and a hint of winter spice.
The mouthfeel is lightly round, with an initially mild alcohol sting quickly replaced by a mild sweetness. The flavors open with nutty toffee, marzipan, and raisins, followed by notes of raspberry jam on dark toast, honeysuckle, and freshly baked peach pie. The malt becomes more evident mid-swallow, along with hints of wet rocks, vanilla chews, custard, and a tease of oak. The finish is long and luxurious, with the fruit emerging atop sohe candied elements: toffee, caramel, vanilla, butterscotch hard candies, and cake frosting. There, at the end of the afterglow, barrel spice, and oak emerge with a hint of white pepper and cardamom.
Keeper’s Heart 10-year-old Málaga Cask Single Malt Irish Whiskey (that’s a mouthful just in the name) is a spectacular example of what a malt whiskey can (and should) be. While I am less of a fan of some of the brand’s bourbon and Irish blends (I’m not a fan of bourbon – nothing to do with the brand!), this Irish single malt is magnificent. And well it should be, coming from the mind and watchful ministrations of distilling legend Brian Nation. His years of experience with Jameson and Redbreast have paid off, marking Keeper’s Heart as a force of reckoning within Irish whiskey production’s small but growing circles. It may not be your daily drinker at $99 USD for a bottle. However, it’s such an extraordinary whiskey that you owe it to yourself to add a bottle to your well-stocked home bar!
