Craving an Old Fashioned but no time to cook up your own simple syrup, measure out the whiskey, and go to all the trouble of slicing oranges and muddling cherries? Relax. The latest RTD (ready-to-drink) releases from Traverse City Whiskey Co. prove a viable — not to mention tasty — pour-and-sip solution.
The northern Michigan-based distillery stakes its reputation on sourcing local fruit for its signature American Cherry Bourbon and an excellent line of gourmet cocktail cherries (Traverse City does bill itself as the Cherry Capital of the World, after all). This summer, that local flavor finds its way into the operation’s two new Old Fashioned products.
“An Old Fashioned is one of the original classic bourbon cocktails,” said Chris Fredrickson, co-founder of Traverse City Whiskey Co. “Our delicious and convenient Old Fashioned cocktails are hand-crafted and ready to pour. They’re a welcomed addition to our portfolio of whiskey offerings.”
Now, I’m usually more of a Manhattan girl, but I don’t turn down a good Old Fashioned and have been excited to taste these. My preference of the two, the Original Old Fashioned, uses TCWC’s award-winning premium bourbon, clocking in at a higher ABV (37%). For a pre-mixed product, I was pleasantly surprised to find the fruit flavor still fresh, with a notable hit of Seville orange. The inclusion of bitters and house-made simple syrup round out this definitely-on-the-sweet-side recipe.
The Cherry Old Fashioned (27% ABV) relies on the company’s best-selling American Cherry Bourbon as its base spirit. This one REALLY drives home the key ingredient. I like cherries, but the sweetness here was almost too much for me. I thought I detected a hint of almond undertone, giving the juice an almost pie-like quality. In both cases, the product benefited from good chilling and the inclusion of a couple of ice cubes for serving in a rocks glass.
