Booker’s is no stranger to high-end bourbon. This year, Booker’s has released four new batches to the market, starting with “Springfield,” the “Beam House Batch,” and then the “Master Distiller’s Batch.” Each is made from unique blends differing in age, proof, and character, and they are all endearingly inspired by the history of Booker’s brand.
The fourth installment of Booker’s 2024 collection honors one of the brand’s pioneers and a Master Distiller in his own right, Jimmy Russell, called “Jimmy’s Batch.” Russell was a close friend of the Noe family that founded and still runs Booker’s, and this expression is a fantastic homage. This bourbon blends four different bourbons from four warehouses scattered throughout Booker’s operation in Clermont, Kentucky. It was bottled at precisely seven years, nine months, and 19 days at 125.8 proof. Like the three other 2024 releases, it comes in a simplistic, elegant wooden case with a clear panel showcasing the iconic Booker’s bottle style.
Tasting Notes
This bourbon is glistening copper in color and has thin, firm, oily legs that latch onto the snifter. The proof is evident straight off the nose. The sharp ABV presence boasts classic, straightforward bourbon aromas of deep oak and potent baking spices of cinnamon and allspice, all accompanied by a sweet, enticing butterscotch aroma.
The sturdy proof comes through even more on the palate. The spice here is sweeter, though, as more warming cinnamon and a delectable snickerdoodle note balance out the bite of the proof exceptionally well. This whiskey even has a buttery, creamy mouthfeel that is comforting and viscous. The finish is super long, the proof slowly tamed and dissipating to a calm conclusion. An ever-lingering warmth connects every sip, making this bourbon an ongoing pleasure throughout the entire pour.
Final Thoughts
Booker’s Jimmy’s Batch is one of those rare, tantalizing bourbons that tastes familiar yet new. The complex dynamic, achieved by its proof, age, and blend, allows the classic notes to shine brightly. Yet, they are complemented and elevated by the layered, more complex notes captured by its unique, proprietary makeup. Newcomers and collectors alike should take advantage of this release while it is still available.
