When I think of Islay whisky, the image of tarry rope is first to mind. Yet to describe Ardbeg’s newest special release, Spectacular (and it is!!!), as tasting of tarry rope is a gross understatement of near criminal proportion! Rather, it is the epitome of Islay, the defining example of what all Islay whiskies strive to be, and yet, with a unique Ardbeg stamp.

Spectacular is the first Ardbeg finished in Port casks, which adds both a depth of sweetness and an incongruent finesse that enhances the malt’s uniqueness. All in all, this year’s limited edition Ardbeg Day release will create the typical level of hubbub that invites an equal measure of quizzical cynicism and adoration from those of us who love Ardbeg whiskies.

Unassumingly light in the glass, the pour explodes with Islay aromas of creosote-soaked sisal, earthy peat, red wine barrel spice, baked apples, barbecue smoke, and a hint of buttery pie crust. Sea salt leads the palate, with tar and smoke enveloping the initial flavors. Unexpected sweetness creeps in, leading to hints of warm caramel, bitter walnuts, and cooked blackberries. Mid-swallow opens with more smoky intensity, with brine and sweet playing alternately. Grilled pineapple, berry pie, and hazelnut notes lead to more hot smoke, then hints of tannic black tea, black pepper, and more wine. Brine reappears in the finish, as does a resurgence of caramel, marzipan, and, as always, smoke. The finish is long, with the creosote, smoke, and a drying hint of roasted almonds trailing into the sunset.

In many ways, this release is more reminiscent of what I think of when I think of Ardbeg. The Islay character is squarely front and center (and behind, and around the sides, and in between, too!). It represents everything I love about Islay Scotch, with a big wet kiss of Ardbeg making its unmistakable mark. At $130 USD, it might not be the one you reach for as your daily dram, but it is one you’ll regret letting slip through your fingers if you don’t buy at least one bottle!
