Citadelle Gin, a division of French spirits giant Maison Ferrand, is no stranger to flavored gins (see our review of Citadelle’s Jardin d’Été). However, none are “stranger” (see what I did there???) than its limited edition release, Vive Le Cornichon. In its never-ending efforts to push the boundaries of fine spirit adventure, Maison Ferrand joined up with French foodie-favorite Maison Marc, which produces organic Cucumis sativus, is used for the pickles included in this savory gin.
The unmistakable Citadelle gin forms the base of this unique infusion. Juniper berry is notable throughout the sip, a hallmark of the brand’s gins. I’m not sure I would exactly call this a “flavored” gin, in that the impact of the pickles is subtle – one more flavor melded into a symphony of botanicals that color the flavor without overwhelming. I also agree with some other reviews I’ve read about the gin – it has more of an olive sense than pickles, and not in a bad way!
Like most Citadelle gins, the juiper and anise are front and center. The crisp and medicinal mouthfeel is augmented by a salty vinegar kick, along with notes of green-olive-in-a-martini. In fact, this is an ideal dirty martini base, as the flavors already lead in that direction.
If you’re looking for a unique but high-quality gin, look no further than Citadelle’s Vive Le Cornichon. At around $35 a bottle, it sits just above the typical store-shelf gin but is well worth the difference.
