S’mores Whiskey

Kaveh Zamanian of Rabbit Hole Distillery has added another expression to his arsenal with Mash and Mallow, a “s’mores-flavored” whiskey. It’s a concept Zamanian had in mind for a while, inspired by his memories of campfires and the company he enjoyed around them. After over six months of experimentation, the final result is here. Although nostalgia was the driving force behind this release, Zamanian’s distilling experience made Mash and Mallow a reality. Starting with a sweeter corn whiskey base, Rabbit Hole added the iconic s’mores flavoring components (graham cracker, marshmallow, and chocolate) developed by a partner supplier. Despite flavored whiskeys not typically appealing to me, when I heard about a s’mores whiskey, I knew I had to try it, a decision I’m glad I made!

Tasting Notes

Unlike many other overly sweet, unnatural-tasting flavored whiskeys that come off as lazy cash grabs, Mash and Mallow was a refreshingly pleasant surprise. The whiskey base is clear and robust, a great foundation for the added all-natural flavorings. It was uncanny how well Zamanian nailed the s’mores flavors. For an offering that some whiskey snobs might typically cast aside as elementary, it’s surprisingly complex. It evolves on the palate, has a sturdy whiskey character, and forgoes the typical syrupy consistency that often defines other flavored whiskeys.

The classic flavor was instantly recognizable, and while the graham crackers and chocolate notes were most evocative, the marshmallow impact was more noticeable in the soft and lush mouthfeel. And just like when eating the real thing, the flavors arrived in waves. The low 35% ABV accentuates the sweetness and the natural flavorings, but Zamanian says he wanted it to be light and festive, more of a shot/cocktail spirit than his other expressions. However, he accomplished his goal without sacrificing balance. The whiskey is delivered in a cheerful-looking matte black bottle adorned with a small jug handle, making it suitable for taking this effortless on-the-go sipper.

Final Thoughts

Mash and Mallow deserves a try, no matter what type of whiskey drinker you are. Even if you don’t drink whiskey, this is an amusing and inviting avenue into the spirit. While it may not constitute an authentic whiskey “revelation,” it’s something new and different – a casual and fun whiskey that anybody can enjoy as a sipper or in a cocktail. I will be adding a splash to my hot cocoa all winter long!
