Old Overholt, one of America’s oldest distillers, has unleashed something special. Professional and home bartenders nationwide know Old Overholt’s flagship bottle as a reliable workhouse rye, suited for any American whiskey cocktail due to its classic, straightforward profile. Although the brand’s label is often only seen in a bar well, this rare, special release from Old Overholt recements its place in the fabric of American distilling.

Old Overholt 10-Year-Old Cask-Strength Rye is, hopefully, among the first of many special edition releases from Old Overholt moving forward. Brand Ambassador Tim Hueisler explains that this is the first cask strength bottling from Old Overholt since the 1950s, an era that saw the brand’s operation move from western Pennsylvania to its current home in Claremont, Kentucky. The differences between this version and the prior release are plentiful – mash bills, water source, climate, etc. However, one endearing coincidence is that despite being distilled over 60 years apart, they’re bottled at the same 121 proof!

Tasting Notes

The 121 proof jumps out right from the start, but aromas of leather, spice, and dark fruit nicely counter the alcohol’s rigidness. As a Kentucky-style rye, there is more roundness than the typically dry characteristic of the category. The heat is somewhat stiff on the palate, but the barrel notes and higher corn content make this beautifully balanced with notes of rich and intense caramel and spice. Typical high-proof, cask-strength bottlings lose some of their deeper, more nuanced notes.  However, this expression’s finish is warm and full of spice, the ABV actually helping accentuate its ten years’ worth of barrel notes.

One factor Hueisler reiterated is that this expression is as pure as it can be, especially given that the escalator-style maturation warehouse is non-climate controlled and that the barrel went unmonitored throughout its lifespan. As a cask-strength whiskey, there is no dilution, with the only foreign-material contact being the straining cloth used before bottling. The result is Old Overholt’s textbook profile enhanced by intensified barrel notes and a significant bump in proof. It’s nothing fancy, simply “striking the nail straight on its head,” the way the brand has always been produced.

Final Thoughts

The Old Overholt name is synonymous with dependability and longevity in the rye category. The brand’s commitment to its flagship expression is admirable, and this limited edition release is a treat to be savored. While there are bells and whistles out there –  special cask finishing, blending, and what have you – this is as candid as the brand itself and in the best way possible.
