There’s a new chick in the nest, and it’s a real beaut. The cheeky Chicken Cock brand out of Bardstown (originally established by James A. Miller in 1856 and revived in 2012 by Matti Anttila) has recently added a new Small Batch Bourbon to a portfolio that includes a Kentucky Straight Bourbon, a Kentucky Straight Rye, and a Double Oak Kentucky Whiskey.
Each small batch in this particular line is unique in that Master Distiller Gregg Snyder selects less than 10 barrels for each, all bottled-in-bond at 100 proof with distinctive aging and rick house storage guidelines. When it’s gone, a new small batch steps up to take its place, and so on down the line. Customers can keep track of what they’re buying via batch and barrel numbers on the bottle labeling.
And what a bottle it is. In keeping with past releases, this stunning apothecary-style vessel features an intricate honeycombed pattern that makes a gorgeous addition to any shelf or collector’s display.
The first Small Batch draws from half a dozen barrels, all aged five years and gleaned from the 2nd and 5th floors of Chicken Cock’s Bardstown facility. The batch may be small, but the flavor is absolutely big and bold.
A deceptively gentle nose hints at sugar cookies and a touch of orange blossom. Then, whoosh — the first sip lights up the palate like a pinball machine, washing over the tongue with a tidal wave of fiery hot honey and butterscotch. The long finish brings forth sweet Honeycrisp apple. I would have clocked this at a much higher proof if I didn’t know better.
A single ice cube or a splash of water tones down the sting, but with flavors like this, why would you want to? Honestly, I like this one neat once the initial burn mellows.
Personally, I prefer the caramel-rich Double Oak, but this first Small Batch release is darn tasty as well, and it’s sure to go fast. Get it while it’s hot, available in stores wherever Chicken Cock is sold and through online retailers.
